This is a photo of a pregnant doll. We spoke with 27-year-old Jika Suga, a doctoral student at the University of the Arts who makes these mail-order love dolls, about her thoughts on the work.
How did people who saw your work in the exhibition react to you?
They said, “This looks like” a love doll, “a self-portrait? I have an emotional attachment to my realistic sex dolls.
In my “Forever Love” series I showed last summer, I dressed the realistic TPE dolls in the actual wedding dress and accessories I wore to the wedding reception, and mailed a “wedding photo” of the TPE love doll.
Reactions to the display varied quite a bit by generation and gender. Some older women praised the realistic Small Breast Sex Doll as representing the dignity of women.
Some men said that pregnant women were erotic.
The photo is 223 cm long and 152 cm wide, bigger than the original, and we set it so that even very tall people have to look up to the work.
Many people associate it with “divine majesty”. Some of them were high school girls shouting, “I want to have a baby.” I heard some high school girls shouting, “I want to have a baby!”
