TPE stands for thermoplastic elastomer, although it is sometimes called thermoplastic rubber. The reason the “rubber” was thrown in was because synthetic rubber was mixed into the plastic to make it stickier and softer – this is perfect for creating lifelike skin on sex dolls, bouncy breasts, jiggly butt cheeks and all that good stuff.

Silicones are thermoset polymers, so unlike TPE thermoplastics, they cool to a harder state. Although some softness and some flexibility can be achieved, they have never been as soft as the best TPE. Silicone is not as easy to manufacture and mold as TPE. It requires vulcanization and is much more difficult to use, which means the overall cost of silicone is higher.

TPE:
Feels softer to the touch
More flexible means more flexible doll
Good thermal conductivity, which means the doll can be warmed to your body temperature better, which is great for hugging on the bed – but TPE is sensitive to overheating (please use curling irons carefully!)
Hypoallergenic raw materials (if synthetic rubber is used and no latex is used, TPE is unlikely to cause allergic reactions)
Susceptible to stains
No talcum powder, feels soft to the touch
Porous material (this is the cause of stains), which means mold will grow if not
Properly maintained and disinfected.

Silicone:
Can have more detailed and realistic features
Not as sensitive to overheating as TPE.
Disinfection is easier due to the low porosity of the polymer
Dirt resistant
Low maintenance
Hypoallergenic
More expensive

Often no oral characteristics (but not always)
