Although it’s probably hard to picture your boss or your old football buddy happily getting it on with a robot, you might be surprised.

More people than you think are on board with the idea, and that’s been even more the case as folks get used to the idea. According to a 2020 survey conducted by YouGov, 22 percent of respondents said they’d be open to getting busy with a sex robot. Those numbers were up 6 percent from 2007 when a similar group was asked the same question.

So, what’s up with that? What’s so appealing about the idea of sex robots, and is this something that could one day become a new norm? Here’s a closer look at everything you need to know.

Who Exactly Is Open to Sex with Robots?

Who do you think of when you imagine the kind of person who fully approves of robot sex? Are you thinking mainly of sexually active teenage boys and shy young men who might not be able to get enough sex in the traditional way? If so, you might be surprised again.

According to the study, it’s not just men who are open to robot sex. Although slightly fewer women than men are interested in sex robots, the difference is just that little. Overall, both men and women like the concept and are willing to explore it if given the chance.

And it’s not just young people who don’t mind looking at sex robots either. 18-34 year olds are more willing to give it a try, but not by much. Members of other demographics, including those aged 55 or over, are almost equally interested. So, yes, you could argue that the world of sex robots might appeal to anyone.

Is Having Sex with a Robot Cheating?

Of course, you may be wondering how even those who embrace the concept of sex robots view having sex with them. Do they see it as equivalent to having sex with another human being, or is it closer to getting off the bed and getting dirty on your own, perhaps with the help of a vibrator or a pocket cat?

According to the same survey mentioned above, many respondents said that they did not consider having sex with a robot to be the same as having sex with another living person. Nor did they think it made sense to define having sex with a robot as cheating or paying for prostitution. About half of the participants wholeheartedly believe that robot sex is a safer option than simply having casual sex with another person.

In other words, the majority of people surveyed seemed to view sex dolls and sex robots as masturbation aids similar in nature to any other sex toy – safe, perfectly acceptable alternatives to dildos, vibrators, fleshlight toys, etc.

What Are the Reasons for the Change in Attitude?

There was a time when the idea of having sex with a robot seemed, at best, like it came out of a snappy science fiction novel. But the more advanced technology becomes commonplace in our society, the easier it is for robots and artificial intelligence to become a part of ordinary people’s lives.

We already live in a world where people are more than happy to ask Siri, Alexa or Google Assistant for help and advice on a daily basis. It’s only a matter of time before AI technology can help people fill in the little gaps in other aspects of their lives too.

In addition, society is becoming more and more open to sex. It is no longer socially acceptable to make people feel ashamed or otherwise prevent others from being who they really are, no matter what they appear to be. Options such as sex toys, casual sex and polygamy are becoming more and more common. Sex dolls and sex robots are about to be next.

While you can be almost certain that the idea of sex robots will become more common and widely accepted as time goes on, it may take a while before you find one in every home like Alexa or Google Assistant.
